Good Things vs Essential Ones
In the April 2001 General Conference, Elder Richard G. Scott asked,
"Are there so many fascinating, exciting things to do or so many challenges pressing down upon you that it is hard to keep focused on that which is essential? When things of the world will crowd in – all too often the wrong things take priority – then it is easy to forget the fundamental purpose of life. Satan has a powerful tool to use against good people. It is: Distraction. He would have good people fill life with good things so there is no room for the essential ones. Have you unconsciously been caught in that trap?"

It is ironic that this quote follows the particular subject matter contained in the previous post. No, irony is not the word, as I have my suspicions that the subject of the previous post is not one of those good things.
Elder Bednar recently taught the same principle in "Quick to Oberve" printed in the Dec. (I think) 2006 Ensign: "Discernment is so much more than recognizing right from wrong. It helps us distinguish the relevant from the irrelevant, the important from the unimportant, and the necessary from that which is merely nice."
The whole article is very, very good.
Yah, whatever.
I think I remember reading a talk by Bednar about something like that. I remember feeling a strong sense of agreement. I will have to read it again.
