Cookie Monster and the Dream Home
"On a Sesame Street program one day, Cookie Monster won a quiz show. He was given his choice among three possible prizes: a $200,000 dream home next month; a $20,000 new car next week; or . . . a cookie, right now. . . . He chose the cookie.
"Now there is nothing wrong with a good cookie. The problem is not that the cookie is bad, but that its satisfaction cannot last. . . . "There is an enormous difference between fleeting, temporary pleasures and long-term, soul-stirring satisfactions. Yet Satan constantly deludes us into believing that the cookie is more valuable than the dream home, mostly because we can have it right now. . . . 'The nearer man approaches perfection, the clearer are his views, and the greater his enjoyments, till he has overcome the evils of his life and lost every desire for sin; and like the ancients, arrives at that point of faith where he is wrapped in the power and glory of his Maker and is caught up to dwell with Him (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 51).' . . . There is no human yearning, no mortal satisfaction that can compare with being welcomed into the arms of the Atoning One in that day when we once more enter his presence." - Bruce C. Hafen, “There Is a Tomorrow,” New Era, Jan 1992, 46
May I suggest that we forego the "cookies" and choose instead the "Dream Home."
The 5 minute interview below is not the game show referenced above, but if you're a Cookie Monster fan like I am, is entertaining none the less.
